Old Hollywood Inspired Engagement Photos at Brunette Wine Bar in Kingston, NY
Looking for engagement photo inspiration in the Hudson Valley? Matt and Helen's Old Hollywood-inspired engagement session at Brunette Wine Bar in Kingston, NY combines timeless film photography, vintage style, and an intimate wine bar setting. As a Hudson Valley engagement photographer, I love helping couples create photographs that feel authentic, romantic, and deeply personal - and this session was a beautiful example of exactly that.
Matt and Helen's engagement session at Brunette Wine Bar in Kingston, NY was exactly that - a timeless afternoon inspired by vintage romance, meaningful details, and a shared love of history, antiques, and old-world charm. Matt + Helen live in Chicago, but they love the Hudson Valley and Brunette is their favorite wine bar in the area.
From the moment they arrived, it felt as though they had stepped out of another era.
With Helen's vintage fur stole, the warm glow of Brunette Wine Bar, and a vision rooted in Old Hollywood glamour, this engagement session felt elegant, cinematic, and entirely true to who they are.
Matt is also a photographer, and between his visual eye and their shared impeccable taste, I knew this shoot was going to be something special. I am ALWAYS so honored any time another photographer (especially one as talented as him) trusts me to document their wedding and engagement. It’s also fun to have someone to nerd out about old film cameras with. You can check out Matt’s gorgeous film photography work HERE.
A Conversation That Never Ended
Like many modern love stories, Matt and Helen first connected through a dating app.
They began texting, and the conversation flowed effortlessly from the start. They talked about art museums, fashion, their beloved dogs, and all of the little things that reveal who a person truly is.
Their first date turned into one of those evenings where time seems to disappear.
"You know the kind of date where you're sitting in a crowded restaurant, completely absorbed in conversation? Then eventually you look around and realize you're the last people there?"
A Shared Love of History, Antiques, and Beautiful Things
One of my favorite things about photographing couples is discovering the passions they share.
For Matt and Helen, that passion is antiques.
“We love antiques! One of the first things Helen shared with me is that she is into Lover's Eyes from 1700s England. We go to flea markets and architectural salvage shops. We actually love it when we stumble upon something old and don't know what it was used for. It's rare that we're both stumped, but we get to learn something new!”
That sense of wonder and appreciation for history influences so much of how they move through the world - and it naturally influenced the vision for their engagement photographs as well.
A Proposal in Portland, Maine
When it came time to propose, Matt and Helen approached it much like everything else in their relationship: intentionally.
They designed Helen's engagement ring together, ensuring it felt deeply personal and uniquely theirs. (One of my favorite engagement rings I have EVER seen!!!!!!! I think designing the engagement ring together is such a lovely approach.)
But while the ring wasn't a surprise, the proposal itself was.
“We designed our engagement ring together, but the actual time and place of the proposal was a surprise. We spent a long weekend in Portland, Maine. While we were getting massages in the hotel spa, Matt had the hotel put flowers and champagne in our room. First, he gave me a leather-bound wedding planner notebook embossed with my new initials. Then he made the sweetest proposal. We didn't tell anyone for a whole day because we wanted to live in the moment just the two of us.”
Why They Chose the Hudson Valley for their Engagement Shoot and Wedding Day
Matt and Helen decided that rather than hosting a large celebration, they chose a wedding weekend with just twenty-five of their closest friends and family members at Senate Garage in Kingston, NY. A truly curated and intimate celebration.
The Hudson Valley felt like the natural choice. It's a place they already love - a destination filled with favorite memories, antiquing adventures, visits with friends, and ski trips.
As Helen shared:
"We both prefer deep conversation in small groups rather than a big party atmosphere. A 25-person wedding weekend just felt right."
As someone who photographs many intimate weddings and celebrations throughout the Hudson Valley, I couldn't agree more. There is something incredibly special about creating space for meaningful connection and slowing down enough to truly experience the day. I have such a soft spot for intimate weddings - I had one myself - and there's something incredibly special about having the time and space to be fully present with a smaller group of people.
Why Brunette Wine Bar Worked So Beautifully for Their Engagement Photos
When choosing a location for their engagement session, Matt and Helen immediately knew where they wanted to go.
Brunette Wine Bar in Kingston, NY.
Nestled in the heart of Uptown Kingston, Brunette has become beloved for its thoughtfully curated wine list, intimate atmosphere, vintage-inspired interiors, and timeless aesthetic.
For a couple whose wedding vision centers around Old Hollywood glamour and vintage elegance, it couldn't have been a more fitting backdrop.
That appreciation for timeless imagery aligned perfectly with my own approach.
As Helen joked before the session:
"If the look and feel of the shoot vibes with my vintage fur stole, we're doing it right."
Why Film Photography Felt Like the Perfect Fit
One of the things I loved most about planning this session with Matt and Helen was how intentional they were about the feeling they wanted their photographs to evoke.
As Helen shared,
"Our engagement shoot and wedding vibe is Old Hollywood Glamour. Since Matt is also a photographer, the vintage feel of black and white film is important to him. It's something Caitlinn does really well."
As someone who photographs engagement sessions and wedding days on both digital and film, I immediately understood the vision.
There is something about film photography that feels especially fitting for a couple like Matt and Helen. Film slows everything down.
At Brunette Wine Bar, surrounded by warm light, vintage details, and the atmosphere of a space that already feels suspended in time, film felt like the natural choice.
The resulting photographs carry a softness and romance that perfectly complemented their vision. They feel less like a modern photoshoot and more like something discovered years later in a family archive.
For a couple whose relationship is built around a love of history, beautiful craftsmanship, and appreciating the stories hidden within old things, I can't imagine a more fitting way to document this chapter of their lives.
