The Ultimate Guide: 19 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer Before You Book

19 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer Before You Book

Wondering what questions to ask before hiring your wedding photographer? This guide covers the 19 most important questions every engaged couple should ask before booking - from photography style and full wedding galleries to timelines, film photography, backup plans, and what really matters when choosing someone to document your wedding day.

Choosing your wedding photographer is about so much more than finding someone whose work you love. Long after your wedding day, your photographs will become one of the few tangible reminders of how your wedding day truly felt. They become your visual legacy for yourselves and your families even after you are gone. As a Hudson Valley wedding photographer, I've had the privilege of documenting hundreds of weddings over the years, and one thing I've learned is that finding the right photographer isn't just about beautiful images - it's about finding someone you feel comfortable around and trust to preserve one of the most meaningful days of your life.

With so many talented photographers out there, knowing what to ask during those first conversations can feel overwhelming. Pricing, packages, editing styles, timelines, second photographers... there's a lot to consider, and not every question carries the same weight.

This guide is designed to help you look beyond Instagram highlights and curated portfolios. These are the questions I believe every couple should ask before booking their wedding photographer - not because there's only one "right" answer, but because the answers will help you find someone whose approach, personality, and values truly align with your own. Whether you're planning an intimate Hudson Valley elopement, a weekend-long wedding celebration, or a traditional wedding surrounded by family and friends, my hope is that you'll walk away feeling more confident about choosing the photographer who's the right fit for you.

Here are the questions I encourage every couple to ask - whether they ultimately hire me or another photographer.

1. How would you describe your photography style?

Many photographers use words like documentary, editorial, fine art, or traditional, but those words can mean different things to different people.

Ask:

  • How much of the day is candid?

  • How much is posed?

  • How do you guide couples who feel awkward in front of the camera?

2. Can we see several full wedding galleries?

Social Media only shows the highlights.

Instead of asking "How many photos will we receive?" ask "Can we see a complete wedding gallery?"

A full gallery shows:

  • family portraits

  • ceremony coverage

  • reception lighting

  • rainy weather

  • difficult lighting situations

  • consistency throughout an entire wedding day

This is one of the most important questions.

A number can't tell you whether your photographer consistently captures quiet in-between moments, family interactions, or beautiful portraits throughout an entire day. A full gallery can.

Consistency matters more than quantity.

A 500 image gallery is nice if it’s extremely curated and polished, a 3,000 image gallery can be overwhelming if it lacks quality.  There is usually a sweet spot somewhere in the middle.

3. How do you approach portraits?

Every photographer poses differently.

Ask:

  • Will you tell us exactly what to do?

  • Do you give prompts instead of stiff poses?

  • How much time do you recommend?

4. What moments are most important for you to capture?

This question reveals what a photographer notices.

Some photographers prioritize décor.

Others prioritize emotion.

Others prioritize fashion.

None are wrong - but they create very different galleries.

5. How do you photograph families?

Family portraits often become heirlooms.

Ask:

  • How do you organize them?

  • How long do they take?

  • Can you help create the family shot list?

6. How much experience do you have photographing weddings?

Experience isn't just years.

Ask about:

  • different venues

  • difficult lighting

  • weather changes

  • timeline adjustments

  • large families

  • intimate weddings

  • religious ceremonies

7. Have you photographed at our venue?

If yes:
great!

If not:
Ask how they prepare before arriving somewhere new.

8. What happens if it rains?

A good photographer already has a plan.

9. Do you photograph film, digital, or both?

If you love film photography, make sure it isn't simply a preset.

Ask:

  • Is it real film? (Ask to see their gear, no…I’m not kidding - I give my potential couples a “camera tour” if they love film photography.  I love talking about my gear and they find it fun and interesting!)

  • Which parts of the day do you photograph on film?

10. How involved are you in timeline planning?

An experienced photographer often helps shape the timeline so couples have enough light and enough time without feeling rushed.

11. Will you help us feel comfortable?

Many couples say:

"We're awkward."

The photographer's answer to this question tells you a lot.

12. Who will actually photograph our wedding?

Will it be:

  • the photographer you're meeting?

  • associates?

  • multiple photographers?

13. Do you bring a second photographer?

Ask:

  • when one is included

  • why they recommend one

  • what moments a second photographer captures

14. What happens if something goes wrong?

Ask about:

  • backup cameras

  • memory cards

  • equipment

  • illness

  • Emergencies

  • back up photographer(s)

15. How do you back up our images?

Professional photographers should have dual slot memory card cameras in case a memory card gets corrupted, etc + multiple layers of backup.

16. How long until we receive our photographs?

Also ask:

  • if/when you’ll receive sneak peeks

  • gallery delivery

  • albums

17. What rights do we have to the photographs?

Can you:

  • print anywhere?

  • share online?

  • make albums?

18. How would you describe your role on a wedding day?

Some photographers are energetic directors.

Some quietly observe.

Neither is wrong.

Choose what feels like you.

19. Why do you photograph weddings?

This is my favorite question.

Technical skill is important.

But understanding why someone photographs weddings often tells you what they'll notice throughout the day.

If I were only choosing FIVE questions...

I'd ask these:

❤️ Can we see 3–5 complete wedding galleries? (Bonus if they are from your wedding venue)

❤️ How would you describe your approach to photographing a wedding day?

❤️ How do you help couples who aren't comfortable in front of the camera?

❤️ What happens if it rains or something doesn't go according to plan?

❤️ Why do you photograph weddings?

Choosing the Right Photographer Is About More Than Beautiful Photos

At the end of the day, there isn't a single "perfect" wedding photographer - only the photographer who feels like the right fit for you.

The person you choose will spend more time by your side than almost any other vendor on your wedding day. They'll witness quiet moments before the ceremony, help you slow down when the day begins to fly by, celebrate with your families, and preserve memories you'll return to for decades to come. That's why asking thoughtful questions matters.

My hope is that this guide helps you feel more confident as you begin your search. Whether you ultimately choose to work with me or another photographer, I hope you find someone whose work you love, whose presence puts you at ease, and who photographs your wedding in a way that feels honest to who you are.
